String Preparation of the Final Product Line
“String preparation” means assembling pipe sections on the ground before lowering them into the trench. This includes welding, inspection, testing, and final quality checks.
Below is the complete process:
1. Pipe Stringing
- Pipes are transported to the site.
- Individual pipes are arranged end-to-end along the trench line.
- Pipes are visually inspected for dents, rust, defects.
Tools/Equipment:
Measuring tape, spirit level
Side booms, pipe tractors
Pipe clamps
Lifting slings
- Tasks:
- Removing debris, rust, coating at weld ends
- Beveling pipe edges (if not pre-beveled)
- Checking roundness and alignment
- Fit-up using clamps
Types of Welding Used:
- SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding)
- GTAW (TIG welding)
- GMAW (MIG welding)
- Automatic welding machines (for large pipelines)
