HDD is a trenchless technology used to install pipes or cables underground without digging the entire route.

How HDD Works:

  1. Pilot drilling from entry point → exit point
  2. Reaming (enlarge bore size)
  3. Pull-back (pipe/cable pulled into the bore)

Where HDD is Used:

  • Highways, railways, rivers crossing
  • Busy roads/market areas
  • Smart city OFC layout
  • Gas/water pipelines

Advantages:

  • No open digging
  • Minimal traffic disturbance
  • Fast and safe
  • Reduced surface restoration cost

Limitations:

Higher cost vs trenching

Not ideal in rocky terrain

Requires skilled operators
